I did not learn to swim until I was 26 years old, as I was terrified of water due to being frightened by swimming lessons at school. I was given supported employment with North East Derbyshire District Council as a Sports Development Worker, and I had to learn to swim as part of that post. I then joined a swimming club for people with learning disabilities and trained as hard as I could and won a few events with them. This club folded and I then joined the Spire Oaks Special Olympics Swimming club for People with Learning difficulties. I have been swimming for two clubs in my short swimming career - Chesterfield Triple A for 3 years, and now at SpireOaks Swimming Club. My parents have been very supportive & understanding and at the club wh ere I swim, the coach is also one of my close friends so she knows what I am like as a person. I had a very enjoyable National Swimming Championships at Sharley Park on the 5th & 6th of May, where the natural step ups from Club Swimmer only to Regional Squad & now National Squad I have yet to attended my first training session but I looking forward to it. Yes it will be tough at the top but if you want to be the best, all you budding swimmers able-bodied & disabled - get to a club & learn to swim, you never know when you will need it. I had a very special Olympics in Cardiff 2001 where I brought home three silvers, one bronze & one fifth place. As I said at the time, I was very disappointed as I thought I could swim faster. The turn was poor by my standards by I sat down with my coaches & talked it though. More about me... My favourite food is pasta dishes like Lasagne and Pizza sometimes will have one as I think it is chill out food. I am a dog lover and we have two dogs at home. Here is a picture of my dog I like going to lots of different swimming venues each year. Yes its good doing sport all week as I am swimmer, so I am used to water and football pitches, cricket pitches and I work for a local Council in the Sports Development Department, also I would like to thank, James Hickman my best mate, Steve Parry my second best mate, Ian Turner Head Coach University of Bath, also some of my swimming mates at Bath, Terry Dennison Head Coach City Of Leeds who I spoke to last Sunday at North Eastern Counties Championships at Sheffield, Chris Nesbit - Head Coach at Portsmouth Northsea, Sue Rolph - City of Cardiff, Mark Foster, Katrina Mcendey, & all The GB National Swim Team Disability. They had been banned since it was found that most of Spain's intellectual disability basketball team at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics were not disabled. As a result, "sports intelligence" tests will form part of the new, more rigorous classification process. ParalympicsGB said it "welcomed" the decision taken on Saturday. Speaking at an assembly in Kuala Lumpur, IPC President Sir Philip Craven said: "Today's achievement is the outcome of a unique and excellent co-operation between sports governance and the scientific community. "I wish all intellectual disability athletes the best of success in their attempt to set world class performances at future competitions." Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, added: "I've been involved in this campaign for the last four years so I know it wasn't a simple decision. "But nobody who's been at the Special Olympics would doubt that its competitors are every bit as committed as the Paralympians." Four sports - athletics, swimming, rowing and table tennis - are now set to be included in the 2012 programme in London. Intellectual disability athletes were barred from competing at both the Athens Games in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 following the scandal surrounding the Spanish team, but moves to welcome them back to the Paralympic fold have been in progress for some time. The failure of a screening process to detect the absence of intellectual disability in several Spanish basketball players was extremely embarrassing for Paralympic organisers. Spain beat Russia in the final to claim gold, but their players subsequently had to hand back their medals after an inquiry found that 10 of the 12-strong squad suffered no handicap. This resolution brings this unfortunate episode to an end Bob Price President, Inas-Fid October's IPC European Swimming Championships in Iceland, at which Britain won seven gold medals, marked the first IPC-run event where intellectual disability athletes were allowed to compete again. The International Sports Federation for Persons with an Intellectual Disability (Inas-Fid) has been working with the IPC on the matter. The two organisations jointly proposed a motion which stated the criteria for reintroducing athletes with an intellectual disability to the Paralympic Games had been met. "We have lobbied hard for the re-inclusion of athletes with a learning disability subject to a robust classification system," read a statement from Tim Reddish, the chairman of ParalympicsGB. "We will now work hard with the sports to ensure that these athletes are best prepared." Bob Price, President of Inas-Fid, said: "I am delighted with the outcome of the vote. Even though they themselves did nothing wrong, intellectual disability athletes have been excluded from the Paralympic Games and other IPC-sanctioned competitions. "This resolution brings this unfortunate episode to an end and reintroduces intellectual disability athletes to their proper place within the Paralympic family." Tracey McCillen, from the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability, told BBC Radio 5 live: "The Paralympic door has finally been opened. HOW CLASSIFICATION WILL WORK Correctly identifying and classifying intellectual disability has been the problem preventing athletes from competing. The IPC now believes it has a solution, as follows: 1. Committee reviews athlete's medical file 2. If deemed eligible, athlete faces sport-specific panel 3. Panel conducts tests on "sports intelligence" ahead of event 4. Test results allow athlete to be appropriately classified "There is a very robust classification system in place and that was at the heart of the decision-making process. It will be held up as a model of good practice and will become clearer over the next few months." Accurate classification, vital to all forms of disability sport, had been highlighted as a prerequisite for the return of intellectual disability athletes to Paralympic competition. Under the IPC's new plans, an eligibility committee established by Inas-Fid will review an athlete's medical file and, if they are deemed eligible, issue a letter to the athlete which allows them to proceed to the next step of the classification process. A separate panel appointed by the relevant sport's governing body then tests the athlete on-site ahead of an event, focusing on what the IPC calls "sports intelligence", including tests relevant to that sport. The athlete's scores in those tests will be compared to "minimal disability scores" in that sport, with the athlete appropriately classified as a result. However, the IPC cautioned that "as of this autumn, no sport-specific minimal disability scores are available yet. "This requires the full analysis of all data collected from the 2009 Inas-Fid Global Games and other competitions, and it is expected that criteria will be made available mid-2010." History of Spireoaks In 1994 our chief coach went to the European Special Olympics in Glasgow as a supporter whilst watching the swimming event she realised that many of the people with Learning Disabilities that she worked with could benefit form taking part in such events. Upon return she founded Spireoaks Special Olympics Club & began to take part in competitions all over the Untied Kingdom & Europe. Several members of the club have represented the National Team . The Club enjoy considerable success in competitions & most of its members represented The East Midlands region in the 2001 National Special Olympics in Cardiff . Team Members are coached by volunteers & family members whom attain a swimming qualification. My name is Adrian Cramp and I live in a large town called Chesterfield, made famous by its Crooked Spire Church. I did not learn to swim until I was 26 years old, as I was terrified of water due to being frightened by swimming lessons at school. I was given supported employment with North East Derbyshire District Council as a Sports Development Worker, and I had to learn to swim as part of that post. I then joined a swimming club for people with learning disabilities and trained as hard as I could and won a few events with them. This club folded and I then joined the Spire Oaks Special Olympics Swimming club for People with Learning difficulties. I have been swimming for two clubs in my short swimming career - Chesterfield Triple A for 3 years, and now at SpireOaks Swimming Club. My parents have been very supportive & understanding and at the club where I swim, the coach is also one of my close friends so she knows what I am like as a person. I had a very enjoyable National Swimming Championships at Sharley Park on the 5th & 6th of May, where the natural step ups from Club Swimmer only to Regional Squad & now National Squad I have yet to attended my first training session but I looking forward to it. Yes it will be tough at the top but if you want to be the best, all you budding swimmers able-bodied & disabled - get to a club & learn to swim, you never know when you will need it. I had a very special Olympics in Cardiff 2001 where I brought home three silvers, one bronze & one fifth place. As I said at the time, I was very disappointed as I thought I could swim faster. The turn was poor by my standards by I sat down with my coaches & talked it though. More about me... My favourite food is pasta dishes like Lasagne and Pizza sometimes will have one as I think it is chill out food. I am a dog lover and we have two dogs at home. Here is a picture of my dog I like going to lots of different swimming venues each year. NEWSFLASH 5th AUGUST 2002 Training update Training is all being gear to the BT nationals in November at Sheffield http://www.disablitysport.org.uk/ or http://www.isport.uk.com/dse I am now back in hard training hoping my second half of the season Is a bit better my first half what has give a lift to all the home nations in Commonwealth Games swim well like my mate James Hickman ,Steve Parry Darren Mew Sarah Price Karen Legg Karen Pickering etc.... My personally for me as they got trashed by the British press after Sydney 2000 made improvements at The World Champs Japan 2001 my personal view is to see Hickman & Parry back on the GB Squad the are world class Fly swimmers but Steve Parry a jack of all trades as is James Hickman. Training Update - July 2002 I just got back into hard training & the training is going very well at the moment. I got a PB in the 100m freestyle in a Lifetime best 1:51.76. I am now looking at 1:50 or below now, so my training is in place now I am hoping for an injury & illness free time as I was ill between June 2001 to February 2002. I worked hard to get back up to full fitness and I'd like to thank my coach Elizabeth Fittsimmons & Brian & Dot Wibberley & all of my swimming mates, Club, Regional & National & GB so Thank you all your support once again. A welsh swimmer from the National Team was winding me up so much that I blew the chance of a gold medal in the 100m Breast-stroke & I knew it but now I have the new Arena powerskin shark skin, I feel very comfortable in it & relaxed. I am swimming very fast in & when I am not wearing I am still swimming fast. Swimming is a sport where sometimes at the top level, mind games come into play with each other so you don't know who's on form and who isn't. Swimming is very slow like the 1500m Freestyle but Jon Champion at the Olympic trials in July 2000 at The Ponds Forge Swimming Complex made the point in his commentary while sitting alongside another good mate, Adrian Moorhouse who I met at World Championship trails in April this Year at Manchester but getting back to point The 1500m is 30 lengths in a Long Course pool & 60 in a short course & the first 800 or 900m is like a heat swim - when you get to 200m to go then hold onto your hat like any race the sprinters like 25,50 or 100 & now 200m of any stroke the last fifty I've done it myself - we go for it & the point I am saying with the photo of James at the Olympics Sydney 2000 at the top level able Bodied & Disabled it serious but when you are learning the sport o.k. you want to be maybe World Record Holder or World ,European, National or Olympic Champion. I've been National Champion last year and I am hoping next year in Reading to defend the title of my Cat B 200m Breast-stroke & hopefully improve on my two bronzes, but all budding swimmers enjoy it first then when you know what to expert then ask you local leisure centre for nearest Swimming Club That how I started - if your want to get somewhere like I did you have to put in the hard punishing training sessions that I still do. Your Toolkit Sign Out Update Your Profile Help Guide About Me ADRIANCRAMP.COM/ABOUTME My name is Adrian Cramp and I live in a large town called Chesterfield, made famous by its Crooked Spire Church. I did not learn to swim until I was 26 years old, as I was terrified of water due to being frightened by swimming lessons at school. I was given supported employment with North East Derbyshire District Council as a Sports Development Worker, and I had to learn to swim as part of that post. I then joined a swimming club for people with learning disabilities and trained as hard as I could and won a few events with them. This club folded and I then joined the Spire Oaks Special Olympics Swimming club for People with Learning difficulties. I have been swimming for two clubs in my short swimming career - Chesterfield Triple A for 3 years, and now at SpireOaks Swimming Club. My parents have been very supportive & understanding and at the club wh ere I swim, the coach is also one of my close friends so she knows what I am like as a person. I had a very enjoyable National Swimming Championships at Sharley Park on the 5th & 6th of May, where the natural step ups from Club Swimmer only to Regional Squad & now National Squad I have yet to attended my first training session but I looking forward to it. Yes it will be tough at the top but if you want to be the best, all you budding swimmers able-bodied & disabled - get to a club & learn to swim, you never know when you will need it. I had a very special Olympics in Cardiff 2001 where I brought home three silvers, one bronze & one fifth place. As I said at the time, I was very disappointed as I thought I could swim faster. The turn was poor by my standards by I sat down with my coaches & talked it though. More about me... My favourite food is pasta dishes like Lasagne and Pizza sometimes will have one as I think it is chill out food. I am a dog lover and we have two dogs at home. Here is a picture of my dog I like going to lots of different swimming venues each year. Yes its good doing sport all week as I am swimmer, so I am used to water and football pitches, cricket pitches and I work for a local Council in the Sports Development Department, also I would like to thank, James Hickman my best mate, Steve Parry my second best mate, Ian Turner Head Coach University of Bath, also some of my swimming mates at Bath, Terry Dennison Head Coach City Of Leeds who I spoke to last Sunday at North Eastern Counties Championships at Sheffield, Chris Nesbit - Head Coach at Portsmouth Northsea, Sue Rolph - City of Cardiff, Mark Foster, Katrina Mcendey, & all The GB National Swim Team Disability. History of Spireoaks In 1994 our chief coach went to the European Special Olympics in Glasgow as a supporter whilst watching the swimming event she realised that many of the people with Learning Disabilities that she worked with could benefit form taking part in such events. Upon return she founded Spireoaks Special Olympics Club & began to take part in competitions all over the Untied Kingdom & Europe. Several members of the club have represented the National Team . The Club enjoy considerable success in competitions & most of its members represented The East Midlands region in the 2001 National Special Olympics in Cardiff . Team Members are coached by volunteers & family members whom attain a swimming qualification.
